Planning the perfect outdoor living space

2020 has brought us many lifestyle changes, some good and some we could live without. One of the biggest overall shifts the country has seen is that people are spending more time at home than ever before.

Staying in is the officially the new going out.

As people spend more time at home, the concept of "outdoor living" has become more and more popular. We've all become hyper focused on our surroundings, especially our outdoor spaces.

Outdoor living simply means bringing elements of the indoors out to create aesthetically pleasing (socially distanced) environments to enjoy with family and friends. And with our mild Texas weather, this concept is perfect for our area.

The possibilities are endless when it comes to creating your ideal outdoor atmosphere - patios, walkways, fire pits, water features, outdoor kitchens and lighting.

We encourage you to dream big and then find a trustworthy landscaping company to help make your vision a reality.

Key considerations as you start thinking about your outdoor makeover:

  • Your budget. The single most important part of the whole process. You can have the most most beautiful outdoor living space you've ever dreamt of but oftentimes, budget can get in the way. Not to worry though, you can always create your outdoor living space(s) in phases.

  • How much space you have to work with? Do you want to focus on the front yard, back yard or both?

  • What's your design style? Modern, traditional, coastal, eclectic and bohemian. Not sure what your style is? Not to worry - you'll figure it out once you start looking for design ideas.

  • What do you want the function(s) of the space to be? Examples include: outdoor dining, relaxing with friends and family, entertainment for your children.

  • Does the space need to multi-task? This can depend on how much space you have to work with.

  • How much time are you willing to spend maintaining your space? Do you want it to be high maintenance, low maintenance or somewhere in between? Luckily, there are options for all three. There are even options that require hardly any maintenance at all.

Once you've answered these questions, the fun begins! Start researching and finding similar concepts to what you're envisioning. Pinterest, Google, Houzz, magazines, other people's backyards, inspiration is all around you. We've also created a gallery of outdoor living projects we've worked on and regularly add to it.

Next step, select your landscaping company.

A few tips:

  • Do your research

  • Ask for recommendations from friends and family

  • Make sure you select a landscaping company with a trustworthy reputation. The quality of their work means nothing without trustworthy employees and a high standard of customer service. Once your project gets started, you may have different crews at your house for weeks, sometimes when you're not at home.
